Redecorating and such things

Just wanted to let you guys know it is not your imagination, I am changing and changing and changing things here. I cleaned up my blogroll for instance, getting rid of several that hadn’t updated in a long time and adding several who I’ve been reading for a long time but haven’t been on there for some unknown reason. I am pretty sure I’m missing some still. It doesn’t look complete. Yes, I read a lot of blogs.

I need to work on the Single Parent Blogs section too but haven’t had a moment to do that yet. Something I was considering doing was importing my content from my old LiveJournal blog. I don’t know if that’s something that would interest you guys. The LiveJournal content is mostly from 2008 and 2009. There are a few posts leading up to the separation– not many because I was terrified to actually write about it and get it out of me. My Ex never ever read my blog but I was terrified the one day he would actually do so would probably be after I wrote about my feelings about the marriage and such things. I really didn’t have to worry but better to be safe than sorry.

My Dad is pushing me hard to migrate to self-hosted and so that will be happening soon, maybe even this weekend. I’m sort of scared– of failing or succeeding honestly. I was looking at the Yakezie people and the Challenge they have– an Alexa rating under 200,000 in six months. I’m in the 1.5M area so that seems really daunting to me. And Alexa doesn’t really make a lot sense to me. I just checked out one site that gets steady traffic and Alexa has no data on them. I feel like page views would be better goals to work at instead of a ranking I don’t really comprehend.

Anyways, please don’t get too attached to any layout or anything like that on here. Nothing is final. And let me know if you’re missing from my blogroll or my Single Parents Blogs page. Oh and let me know if you’d be interested in the old stuff. I had a Diaryland before I had a LiveJournal so there’s that as well, but I figure I better handle one thing at a time. If you have suggestions, fire them at me. I’m trying to figure out where to host it for instance. And I’m trying to read up on the actual migration process. If any of you have been through it and have some tips for me– fire them at me either in the comments or at my email.

Right. That’s because Alexa is a made up metric. It collects data from people who visit your site who have the Alexa browser bar installed. If someone doesn’t have the plug in installed, then their visit doesn’t register and the metric isn’t tracked. It’s virtually useless except for places like Yakezie where they use it as a measure of “popularity”.

  2. Yeah, Alexa is a bit BS and not a great metric as it’s only accounting for viewers who have its toolbar installed (which is only bloggers, basically).

Pageviews, subscribers, page rank, mozrank are all important.

  3. I like that you’re making changes, I feel like I should make some of the same. I’m self hosted and totally love it! I have yet to do the good blog roll stuff; if you figure out a perfect method for it and the rest I might just borrow some of your ideas.

  4. First of all, I’m so lucky to have “met” awesome, like minded people in the last month that I came to wordpress with my blog…like YOU. Means a lot to me and I’ve added you to my blog love page, too! I think you ROCK!

I think bringing over old stuff to new stuff is sometimes needed, esp for the content of what we go thru as people and our experiences. My old blog has sooo much dark and twisty in it…I may do that, too, someday. Something that you may have gone through back then could be just what someone is starting to go through now. We all relate on so many levels.

Change is ALWAYS good and is much needed! Can’t wait to see what you come up with!!

    • Aww thank you so much for your sweet words. I’m glad to have met you as well. I love that so much about blogging and the internet. It’s very nice to connect.

You’re right about the fact that our past experiences can be helpful. I was reading through some of my old stuff– it’s a very emotional experience.

  5. No matter what I did….my Alexa rating was never 200k. I wouldn’t sweat it.

The other day when you were making changes….your old entries were showing up in my feed. At first, I didn’t realize they were old when I was looking at the blurb. But there was one where you were finishing the nursery…and I was like WHAT???? When did I miss THAT announcement????? But it was from 2006….all is good.

    • Oh crap I had NO idea they were going to my feed. I have no idea how that actually happened because they aren’t in my blog. I started to import them and they never made it. CREEPY
